7 of Cups Rx

Love it! Tonight’s #pmtarot is the 7 of Cups Reversed and that is the perfect embodiment of what I wanted to talk about in this post. Sometimes, when I pull a card that shows exactly what I want, I can’t help but wonder: “Did my intuition pull this card because it is real or because it is exactly the one I want?”

This the risk you run when pulling for yourself or someone you are close to. A reader has to remain neutral and focused only on the truth. This can be hard when you have strong feelings about the subject. Sometimes, this is when it is best to let go and ask another reader for help. However, if this isn’t an option, such as the best friend that really needs direction, then learning how to meditate and center yourself is important.

Take the time to center yourself before the reading. Make a ritual of it. Clear your mind of all your preconceptions and opinions on the matter. Most importantly, open your mind to all the possibles. You maybe surprised by the truth you find!

9 of Swords

Last night was the 9 of Swords. Maybe it was because I was thinking about it for yesterday’s #amtarot, but I felt like the person on the card. I got no sleep because all these worries kept popping into my head.

“What if someone breaks in the car and steals the gifts or even the gifts? Why is the dog pacing the room and sniffing? Is she going use the bathroom in here? I need to get to sleep or there is no way I’m going to make it through Midnight Mass. What if the dogs are bad at my parents’ house? I hope they don’t ruin anything there. Where are we going to set-up their kennels? Why is she whining now? Am I really going to have to walk them at 3am (Yes)? Is it morning yet?”

And on and on…

I told myself I was just being the guy on the 9 and needed to just stop. But I didn’t & now I exhausted. Hubby is driving, so maybe I can get some sleep soon.

At least the dogs are laying down now. (Unless we hit a bump, then Brutus must stand up and start the 5 mins of circling all over to lay back down.)

Learning a New Spread

Every now and then, there comes a time when there is a need to try a spread. Sometimes it may be a situation specific layout for a client, or sometimes to add a little variety or just for the sake of knowing one more. If you are anything like me this is often harder than it sounds (or seems like it should be!). I often find that it is easy to become accustomed to a particular layout and the order of cards it uses. When changing to a new layout, the first few times the cards may not seem to fit because they are still following the other layout’s order. It is important to be aware that using a new spread takes a little more than just “read it and throw it”, and I have found a few tricks that have helped me move to a new spread.

First (and most obviously) read through the layout thoroughly. Make note of any symbolism or numerology used. Next just take a deck and lay the cards out appropriately. There is no need to shuffle the cards, and it is even best not to concentrate on any question or idea. The only interest here is looking at the layout itself. Often I will even leave the cards faced down as to not distract me. Review each position and associate it visually to its placement on the table. This is where I look for the energy of the layout and how it should flows from card to card.

For more complex layouts or ones that I cannot quite get a good “feel” for, I will sometimes do a layout reading where I shuffle the card concentrating solely on the positions and spread itself. I then layout the cards again, repeating the meaning of each position over in my head as I lay the card. Then I look to in the cards to help connect with each position. Finding the right connection with a spread is just as important as connecting with the deck you use.

Always take time with a new spread before taking on big questions or new people with it. Play with it and work with it regularly to build up the relationship before you go strutting it around town. And while you shouldn’t give up on a spread too quickly, also don’t force it. Sometimes that connection to a spread may never happen, and it may be best to move on.

Changing up your tarot routine is always a good idea to keep from getting too accustomed to one spread. Some spreads are better for some clients than others, and tailoring that can help you get the heart of the matter at question and find the insight needed. Don’t be intimidated by new spreads or the extra effort they may take.

The 8 of Cups Rx and the 9 of Cups, together

I find today’s #amtarot (9 Cups) an interesting follow-up to yesterday’s #pmtarot (8 Cups, Rx – even though due to a late night I wasn’t able to participate). Maybe they seem to be linked because they are consecutive numbers or maybe it is because they seem to speak to a situation a friend is in.

The 8 of Cups, righted, talks about leaving what you know and moving on. Cups tend to also add a layer to imply that this is in the field of love, relationships, and creativity. Leaving these 8 Cups is not easy, but you have the promise of your dreams ahead of you. Righted, this card seems to urge you to move forward and follow your dreams, giving you hope. Reversed, however, it carries a warning and shows fear.

I look at this card in its reversed position in two ways and would read it one way or the other depending on the other cards in the spread and the over all energy surrounding the spread and the Querant.

Case 1: The warning. The Querant may be too quick to walk away, giving up before really trying. The reversal warns that this is not the right path and needs to be rethinked. Sometimes the grass is not greener and dreams can fade the moment you try to touch them. Make sure that this path is truly the right way to go because you may not be able to turn back.

Case 2: Fear. The Querant may not be willing to walk away and follow the dreams due to fear. This may be fear of the unknown. It may also show fear of losing what you have even if it isn’t doing all that well. Something is stopping the Querant from following the new path and a little push needs to be given to help them along their way.

Now, seeing the two cards together, 8 of Cups Rx and the 9 of Cups only strengthens the duality of the Eight. The 9 of Cups promises the greatest rewards for the right choice but offers little in hinting which choice to make.

Case 1: By repressing this desire to leave (8 of Cups Rx), one can really focus on building and fixing those Cups. Someone so ready to divorce and move on, may choose instead to work on the marriage with a renew sense of effort. This could lead to finding a new and deeper connection with the spouse and a marriage that is everything the Querant could want. Love and friendship is abound and overflowing.

Case 2: Overcoming that fear of leaving (8 of Cups Rx), in closing the eyes and just putting one foot in front of the other, One may just find that all the support and care needed to move on from the current instability is there and ready. Friends will rally around the Querant and help him or her find his/her way to the promised land. Leaving will truly help the Querant find a better more stable life.

My friend, who I alluded to earlier, stands at the crossroads of the Eight of Cups, Reversed. I have yet to figure out which way to point and how to help the friend make the right choice and find the way to the Nine of Cups.

A Few 3 Card Readings

Last night I had some things weighting on my mind, so before I went to bed I pulled a few cards.

The first set: Ace of Discs|Knight of Cups|2 of Pents

Second set: Queen of Cups|8 of Wands|4 of Swords

Third set: 9 of Swords|10 of Wands|2 of Cups

The first set I had to stretch more to fit into what I was concerned with. The second set worked better. It wasn’t until this morning that I looked at the cards and realized that they all fit if I look at them in celtic cross formation. Of course I realize that this morning after not pulling a 10th card. However, that is ok. The biggest thing that I got from this was the second set. In this deck the Queen of Discs is symbolizes questioning and knowledge as a precious gift. Paired with the 8 of wands crowning me it shows that my mind is racing to find answers that I need. But the 4 of swords shows that my answers will only come when I learn to quiet my mind and slow down first. The rest is not as important and tell me things I already know.

So, I’m not all that good at this part, but I’m sitting in a hotel room, so why not?

I have hopes that this will work like I want, but no promises. I will post readings – aiming for once a week, let’s say Tuesdays. However, life happens, so no apologies if it doesn’t happen. We all know up front! =)

I have a few more things to tie up, but hopefully I can get this up and going soon.
